The International Biotechnology Conference and Workshop (ICW) is an international standard program organized by the Masters and Doctoral Study Program in Biotechnology at the Graduate School of Gadjah Mada University. In collaboration with the UGM Biotechnology Center and the Indonesian Biotechnology Consortium, this event was held on 3 – 4th July 2024 in a hybrid conference at the Eastparc Hotel Yogyakarta which was attended by scientists, practitioners and academics with a scientific background in biotechnology.
The main theme of the Biotechnology Conference discusses “Biotechnological Approaches in Food Security and Nutrition for Sustainable Global Health”. The reason for this event establishment is to create synergy between academics and national and international institutions with various parties from scientific disciplinary backgrounds, government agencies, and stakeholders who deal with food security and nutrition to support sustainable global health and community welfare in the future.
The important points discussed in this conference include agricultural biotechnology for food improvement, Omics approaches in improving nutrition, microbial technology for food improvement, synthetic biotechnology for nutraceutical and novel foods, and functional food for health.
Presenting competent speakers in the field of biotechnology, namely Prof. Dr. Chin-Kun Wang – Chung Shan Medical University, Taiwan, Dr. Enny Sudarmonowati from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Ir. Mastur, M.Sc., Ph.D. from the Indonesian Biotechnology Consortium (KBI), and several other presenters from domestic universities, this event was successful in attracting participants to provide their views on phenomena and developments in the field of technology.
This event consists of a plenary session and parallel session. Plenary session 1 was filled with speakers who discussed the topic “Agricultural Biotechnology for Food Improvement and Production”, while plenary session 2 discussed the topic “Functional Food, Nutrigenomics and Nutrigenetics”. Then it continued with a parallel session which was attended by UGM academics and practitioners and from other agencies who presented research results or analysis related to the 2 (topics) discussed in the plenary session.
The activity was successful with interactive discussions between participants and presenters. It is hoped will create concrete action as a form of realizing sustainable global health and prosperity.
