Yogyakarta, July 2nd, 2024 – Higher Education Management Master Program at the Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (SPs UGM) held a guest lecture with the theme “Transformation of Higher School Education and Innovative Talent Cultivation,” featuring the distinguished speaker Prof. Dr. Jiang-Bang Deng from the Department of Education and Future Design, Tamkang University, Taiwan. The guest lecture took place in the Seminar Room of the SPs UGM Building and was attended by students, lecturers, and education practitioners from various institutions.
In his presentation, Prof. Dr. Jiang-Bang Deng highlighted several key points regarding the comparison of higher education systems between Indonesia and Taiwan. He explained that although both countries have education curricula designed by ministries or government agencies with the aim of advancing the quality of human resources, there are fundamental differences in students’ mindsets.
According to Prof. Dr. Jiang-Bang Deng, students in Indonesia tend to have a short-term, practical mindset oriented towards the job market. This mindset often limits their vision in contributing to the nation’s development. In contrast, students in Taiwan have a more forward-looking mindset. Education in Taiwan is designed to develop students’ talents and interests so that they can become agents of change and contribute to the development of their nation.
Prof. Dr. Jiang-Bang Deng also emphasized that education in Taiwan focuses on developing students’ talents and skills, facilitated by the state. Students in Taiwan are encouraged to be creative and to love their country, with the goal of bringing Taiwan on par with Western countries such as Europe and the United States.
The guest lecturer hoped Indonesian students will emulate the Taiwanese education system and even use it as a model in developing the quality of education. It is hoped that with a more advanced and innovative mindset, Indonesian students can contribute to improving the quality of education and help enlighten the nation through education.
The event concluded with an interactive question and answer session, where participants could directly discuss various aspects of education and innovative talent development with Prof. Dr. Jiang-Bang Deng. All participants felt inspired and gained valuable new insights from this guest lecture.
