The Disaster Management Master Program (MMB) successfully held a visiting lecture in collaboration with Chiba University, featuring distinguished experts Prof. Katsumi Hattori and Taichi Noda, M.D., Ph.D., on October 28th 2025. The event took place in Meeting Room A103, Building Unit 1, Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada.
The lecture was attended by 40 students from the Disaster Management Master Program as well as students from the Geo-Information for Disaster Management Master Program. Each speaker presented engaging and insightful topics related to earthquake and tsunami disaster studies.
On this occasion, Prof. Katsumi Hattori delivered a presentation titled “Challenge to Short-Term Earthquake Forecast: Establishing a Safe and Secure Society from Earthquake and Tsunami Disasters.” Meanwhile, Taichi Noda, M.D., Ph.D. shared his insights through a presentation entitled “Experiences Before and After Disaster: Perspective in Medical Science.”
The forum provided an in-depth discussion of recent findings on natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis, emphasizing their long-term impacts. It also explored the results of detailed investigations into earthquake forecasting, focusing on phenomena that show significant correlations with seismic activity.
The main objective of this event was to introduce cutting-edge scientific efforts and to highlight the need for developing new interdisciplinary fields related to sustainable disaster mitigation. Students were given scientific insights into how data from Earth observation satellites and geostationary meteorological satellites can be used to study the potential for early detection of lava eruptions caused by volcanic disasters.
