The Environmental Science Master’s Study Program at the Postgraduate School of Gadjah Mada University again held field activities for the Field Work Lecture (KKL) course on 15th-19th July 2024 on the coast of Jatikontal Village and Gedangan Village, Purwodadi District, Purworejo Regency, Central Java Province with the theme “Development Studies Coastal Areas Based on Waste Management”. This activity was attended by 14 students of the Environmental Science Master’s Study Program class of 2022 and 2023 with 3 supervisors, namely Dr. Bachtiar Wahyu Mutaqin, S.Kel., M.Sc., Prof. Dr. Ig. L. Setyawan Purnama, M.Sc., and Dr. Rika Harini, S.Si., MP.
Series of activities consisting of field sample point verification, observation, data management, and evaluation of biotic cluster studies were carried out by 5 students. The activity has been planned since March until the finalization process in July 2024. On this occasion, students tried to study the waste and mangrove problems on the coast of the Jatikontal Mangrove Area and Gedangan Village.
“The results of the biotic study analysis that has been carried out in the form of a vegetation diversity index on Jatikontal Beach can be categorized as moderate. “Furthermore, we analyzed the mangrove health index in the Gedangan Mangrove Education Park, which can be categorized as good, while for the Jatikontal Mangrove it can be categorized as moderate,” said Heri Wijaya, a student participating in field work as a biotic cluster coordinator.
The waste problem in urban coastal areas cannot be separated from the rate of population growth. The flow of waste disposal carried out by people living on the coast also needs to be observed. Waste dumping along river flows by the community and industry also contributes to the large amount of waste on the coast.
This activity has a general aim so that all parties above can understand the direction of developing coastal areas based on waste management. Waste has become an environmental problem which has not been resolved to this day. This is a form of support for the realization of sustainable development goals.
