As part of fulfilling the Tri Dharma (three pillars) of higher education, the Doctoral Program in Environmental Science at the Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada conducted a Field Study (Kuliah Kerja Lapangan – KKL) in the Wae Rebo and Labuan Bajo regions of East Nusa Tenggara. This activity took place from July 1st to 7th, 2025.

On this occasion, the Doctoral Program in Environmental Science carried the theme “Green Economy and Blue Economy” under the title “Eco-Tourism Trend Dynamics to Support Super Premium Tourism in East Nusa Tenggara.” A total of 25 students actively participated in this KKL activity, under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Drs. Eko Haryono, M.Si., and Drs. Sudaryatno, M.Si.

The aim of this activity is to strengthen collaboration between UGM Graduate School and the East Nusa Tenggara Provincial Government, a partnership that has been initiated since 2022. In addition, the program seeks to promote education regarding sustainable environmental development and support regional development aligned with government directives such as food, water, and energy self-sufficiency.

The program began with a journey to Wae Rebo Village, followed by a traditional welcoming ceremony by the local community. A discussion was held with residents on the topic “Ancestral Culture Amidst the Pressures of Technological Modernization.”

On the following days, students visited and held talk shows at Padar Island, Long Beach/Pink Beach, Komodo Island, Taka Makassar, and Manta Point. These talk shows explored the dynamics of the ecotourism concept in super-premium tourism areas, emphasizing environmental balance. Representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, Komodo National Park, Komodo Survival Program, and El Bajo Polytechnic were invited to participate.

The activity concluded with a gathering on Kanawa Island. Students were treated to stunning natural scenery, further enhancing their appreciation for the natural beauty of Labuan Bajo.
