Yogyakarta, April 8th 2026 – The Graduate School (SPs) of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has reaffirmed its position as a dynamic center for cross-disciplinary academic collaboration within the university environment. The strategic synergy of the Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies Doctoral Program (PSPSR) and the Department of History, established an in-depth discussion titled “History and Memory Making Through Arts and Performance.” It was successfully held on Monday, April 6th 2026. This scholarly meeting aimed to dissect how art can serve as a vital instrument in documenting past events. The activity also stands as tangible proof of the importance of inter-faculty cooperation in enriching the academic horizons of postgraduate students. By presenting diverse perspectives, SPs UGM strives to create a critical and innovative space for dialogue for the entire academic community.

Meeting Room A on the 5th floor of the UGM Graduate School building witnessed the convergence of sharp academic perspectives as Dr. Sadiah Boonstra took the stage as the keynote speaker. She is an esteemed historian currently serving as a Research Fellow at UGM and an Honorary Fellow at Melbourne University. During her presentation, Dr. Sadiah invited participants to delve into a “time tunnel” to observe how historical events and a nation’s collective memory can be reinterpreted. She emphasized that history does not only live within the pages of textbooks but is also nurtured and revitalized through the more emotional medium of performing arts. This profound explanation provided participants with new insights into creative ways of archiving a nation’s cultural heritage.

The atmosphere of the discussion remained vibrant and even grew more engaging as the session progressed despite being held in the afternoon. Students from both PSPSR and the Department of History appeared deeply immersed in the interactive Focus Group Discussion (FGD). This warm interaction with an international expert proves that the issue of cultural heritage remains a compelling topic that challenges young postgraduate intellectuals to analyze it critically. Throughout the event, participants actively provided insightful questions and responses to the material presented. This dynamic atmosphere reflects the high enthusiasm of students in exploring the links between artistic practice and historical narratives within society.

More than just a platform for knowledge sharing, this initiative by PSPSR SPs UGM is a concrete step toward supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The program aligns with Quality Education (SDG 4) by providing postgraduate students with direct access to world-class expertise. Furthermore, this collaboration explicitly supports Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17) by strengthening synergies with global expert networks. Through such international activities, SPs UGM continues its commitment to enhancing educational quality and expanding global cooperation networks. It is hoped that similar activities will be held sustainably to strengthen UGM’s position as a world-class university.
