Environmental Science Doctoral Program at UGM Commemorates World Environment Day with National Symposium to Promote Cross-Sector Collaboration

Yogyakarta, June 24th 2025 – The Environmental Science Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a national symposium to commemorate World Environment Day 2025. The event took place in the SPs UGM Auditorium and was attended by 400 participants online via Zoom and the UGM Graduate School’s YouTube channel.

Featuring expert and competent speakers, the symposium included academics and practitioners from various disciplines and sectors, particularly in politics, law, and environmental resource management. The overarching theme of the session was “Environmental Law Enforcement for a Sustainable Future.”

One of the academic representatives, Dr. Wahyu Yun Santoso, S.H., N.Hum., L.LM., a lecturer in Environmental Law at UGM, discussed “Environmental Law Enforcement as an Instrument for Climate Change Mitigation: Implementation Challenges and Policy Directions.”

Adv. Tri Suyud Nusanto, S.Si., S.H., M.M., M.Th., M.H., C.EIA, from the professional sector, presented a talk titled “The Role of Lawyers in Environmental Law Enforcement: Balancing Corporate Interests and Environmental Sustainability.”

Following the presentations, a panel discussion was held featuring representatives from various sectors, including academia, professionals, and NGOs. They shared insights on cross-sector collaboration ability to strengthen environmental law enforcement.

The symposium also included an interactive session, where participants engaged directly with the speakers and asked questions. Many expressed concern about the current state of environmental degradation and emphasized the urgent need for action.
