Two doctoral students from the Halal Economics and Industry (PIIH) program at the Graduate School of UGM, Irna Puji Lestari and Ragil Satria Wicaksana, participated in the 2nd International Conference on Islamic and Halal Economic Studies (ICIHES) held at the DoubleTree Hilton Johor Bahru, Malaysia, on November 3th to 4th 2024.

The event, organized in collaboration with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Agro Bank Malaysia, Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto University, and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, aimed to enhance the academic competence of students, particularly in the fields of publication and research dissemination.

The 2nd ICIHES also served as a relevant platform for the two doctoral students from PIIH UGM to present topics from their dissertations.

During this event, two articles were successfully presented and received positive feedback from the Session Chair, Dr. Raudha Md Ramli, as well as from the Chairman of the event. The presented topics were: “Resilience Evolution of Halal MSMEs: A Systematic Review of Strategies and Key Actors Facing Sustainable Economic Challenges” and “Harnessing Sustainability: How Islamic Corporate Governance Elevates Islamic Bank Performance in Indonesia.”

Also present at the event was Dr. Reni Rosari, M.B., the Chief of the PIIH Doctoral Program, accompanied by Dr. Rika Fatimah P.L., S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., a faculty member at PIIH UGM specializing in Halal Product Management.

The theme of the 2nd ICIHES was “Exploring Islamic Ethics and Sustainability Within The Halal Economy.” This theme is explicitly connected and strongly contributes to the research, service, and teaching activities within the PIIH UGM PhD program.

Various global insights were shared and developed during intensive discussions to find new solutions to address sustainability issues in the halal economy throughout the event. Experts from international academic institutions, Islamic finance, and Halal Industry specialists, including Professor Emeritus Dr. Kosugi Yasushi from Ritsumeikan University Japan, Professor Mehmet Asutay from Durham University United Kingdom, Professor Dr. Nagaoka Shinsuke from Kyoto University Japan, Dr. Salma Ahmad Shaikh from IIUM, and Professor Dr. Abdul Ghafar Ismail from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, actively participated in the panel discussion sessions.

National banking practitioners from Malaysia, such as Mohamad Taufik Mahamad Zakaria, CSO of Agrobank Malaysia, also shared interesting perspectives on the development and strategic policy models implemented by Islamic financial institutions.

This activity also reflects the implementation of SDG Goal 4 on Quality Education and Goal 17 on Partnerships to Achieve the Goals.
