Yogyakarta (28/02), 10 students of the UGM Population Master Program conducted a field study activity in the area around Code River in Yogyakarta. The coordinator of this activity was Prof. Bakti Setiawan who is a lecturer in charge of the Population and Environment course.
The activity began with an introduction to the Code River, an important waterway that flows through Yogyakarta. Prof. Setiawan emphasized the importance of understanding the role of rivers in people’s daily lives, including their impact on health and economic activities.
“From the implementation of the field study to the Code River residential area yesterday, we learned a lot of lessons. Starting from the application of the 3M principle (Mundur, Munggah, Madhep Kali), the application of Public MCK for densely populated settlements, and a portrait of an organized densely populated area.” said Donny Prasetyo, a Population Master Program student who participated in the field study activity.
Nur Aini, a Population Master Program student also gave an interesting impression of this field study activity. “Prof Bakti provided a comprehensive overview of population and environmental problems by providing concrete examples. A lot of knowledge was gained from this activity, providing a point of view from the community’s perspective on why they choose to live on riverbanks and how the government is trying to provide decent conditions for the community. The bonus is getting a beautiful view and 2000 additional steps today. It was fun,” she said.
This field study also included a discussion of potential solutions to the challenges faced by the community. Follow-up community workshops on sanitation and hygiene, and collaboration with local governments to improve water infrastructure. These solutions aim to empower residents and promote sustainable practices in line with the SDGs.
