A number of beautiful and meaningful Gringsing woven fabrics were displayed at the 5th Floor Auditorium of the Postgraduate School Building at UGM during the Book launching event titled Gelar Wastra dan Wicara Tenun Gringsing: Vitalitas Tenun Gringsing Bali (The Vitality of Gringsing Weaving in Bali) by Prof. Etty Indriati, an academic from the Religious and Cross-cultural Master Program of the Postgraduate School (SPs) UGM, on Wednesday, February 12th 2025.
This event was organized in collaboration with the Religious and Cross-cultural Master Program, Inter Religious Doctoral Program, and Kompas Publisher.
In her remarks, UGM Rector, Prof. Dr. Ova Emilia, M.Med.Ed., Sp. OG(K)., Ph.D., stated, “Through this book, Prof. Etty illustrates how Gringsing Weaving represents harmony and reflects the cultural identity of the Balinese people, and this book serves as a great medium to advocate for efforts to preserve traditions as the cultural identity of the nation,” said Prof. Ova.
“Of course, this aligns with UGM’s identity as a center of culture, and it supports the efforts made by Prof. Etty and other academics who are active in works and the preservation of our national culture,” added Prof. Ova.
Meanwhile, during an interview session, Prof. Etty explained, “Gringsing weaving has a very intricate technique, double ikat, and is very rare. Only three countries in the world can produce it—Indonesia, India, and Japan. In addition, this fabric is used for rituals and ceremonies for the Tenganan Kegringsingan village community. So, I decided to research and collect all the motifs and observe the production and usage methods,” she said.
This event aligns with the implementation of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), particularly Goal 4 on Quality Education, Goal 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth, Goal 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production, Goal 15 on Life on Land, and Goal 17 on Partnerships for the Goals.
