Yogyakarta, September 22nd 2025 – Students from the 2025 batch of the Tourism Studies Master Program (MKP) at the Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a Field Lecture as part of the Community-Based Tourism course on Monday, September 22nd 2025. The activity focused on two destinations in Turi District, Sleman—Pancoh Ecotourism Village and Pulesari Tourism Village—to comparatively study the application of community-based and sustainable tourism.
The activity, attended by 11 students, aimed to bridge theoretical understanding with practical implementation in the field. This field lecture had three main objectives: first, to identify the management of a tourism village using the Community-Based Development method; second, to understand the practices of managing nature- and culture-based tourism; and third, to identify the implementation of sustainable tourism management in accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy No. 9 of 2021. Drs. Hendrie Adji Kusworo, M.Sc., Ph.D., as one of the course lecturers, explained the unique approach of this activity. “By visiting two villages with different characteristics in one day, students can conduct a direct comparative analysis. They learnt from the managers’ presentations and trained to perform a rapid assessment (snapshot assessment) of the application of sustainable tourism principles in both locations,” he stated.
The morning session was held at Pancoh Ecotourism Village, where students received material from Mr. Ngatijan, the manager, followed by a discussion and a snapshot assessment. In the afternoon, the activity continued at Pulesari Tourism Village with a presentation from the manager, Mr. Didik, as well as further discussion and assessment. In addition to the discussion sessions, students also had the opportunity to directly experience a local tour package, such as picking salak (snake fruit) and learning about the cultivation and processing of the fruit, which is characteristic of the Merapi slopes.
As a final output, each student is required to compile a field observation report that will be part of the course evaluation. Through this activity, the UGM Tourism Master Program continues its efforts to equip its students with sharp analytical competencies and practical understanding to contribute to the development of a higher quality and more sustainable Indonesian tourism sector.
