Yogyakarta (9/7) – Gadjah Mada University is trusted to host the annual international conference of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) in 2024 with the theme “Global Asias: Latent Histories, Manifest Impacts” which will last for three days, 9-11 July 2024. In this event, 300 panel sessions were held which were divided into two faculties of Gadjah Mada University, including the Faculty of Economics and Business and the Faculty of Cultural Sciences. This event was organized by several agencies including Gadjah Mada University, Association for Asian Studies (AAS), The American Institute for Indonesian Studies, and the UGM Research Directorate.
This conference explored and reviewed in depth the position of Asia in the world through sharing sessions and discussions in panel sessions which were attended by scientists throughout the world. The theme “Global Asia” serves as a call for scientists from various scientific disciplines to unite and seek innovative solutions and transformative insights regarding current conditions amidst the hustle and bustle of globalization.
In this opening, Prof. Dr. Ova Emilia, M.Med.Ed., Sp.OG(K)., Ph.D, Chancellor of UGM, said that connectivity and interdependence have never happened before, and currently the dynamics of global engagement are increasing. Therefore, it is important to adopt a multidisciplinary approach to understand the complex interconnections between Asia and the global order.
Gadjah Mada University Postgraduate School (SPs UGM) also contributed to this prestigious event. Zainal Abidin, M.A., Ph.D. and Dr. Yulianti, B.A., M.A. from SPs UGM served as keynote speaker and moderator at the keynote address session. Students from several study programs such as Inter-religious Studies, Religion and Cross Culture, as well as Cultural and Media Studies, enlivened the panel sessions which were a shame to miss. The involvement of UGM SPs in this conference is an effort by SPs to support innovative research in facing more complex future challenges.
The series of events at this conference were very interesting and inspired the participants to actively participate in learning and sharing important knowledge related to Global Asia. The special events offered workshops and discussion sessions. These events were on various interesting topics such as Workshop on Migration and Interconnectivity in the Global South, Workshop on Timor Leste-Indonesia Reconciliation, “Global China” Dissertation Workshop, and Gamelan Workshop & Visiting Student Community Service (SCS-CEL UGM). The Master of Religion and Cross-Cultural Study Program (CRCS) and the Inter-religious Studies (IRS) Doctoral Study Program at the Gadjah Mada University Postgraduate School (SPs UGM) held a talk show session with the theme “The Future of the Study of Religion in Indonesia: Opportunities and Challenges” moderated by Prof. Dr. Fatimah Hussein.
This activity is in line with the sustainable development goals (Sustainable Development Goals) pillar 4 regarding quality education, pillar 16 regarding peace, justice and strong institutions, and pillar 17 regarding partnerships to achieve the goals.
