Kusuma Anggara, often called Angga, a student of the Fall Semester of the Academic Year 2023/2024 in the Master’s Program in National Resilience at the Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (SPs UGM), shared his story of winning in an Orienteering Race and what he learned from the event. Successfully achieving victory over hundreds of participants, Angga learned the art of making prompt and accurate decisions from this competition.
Orienteering is a competition that combines running with navigation skills. Participants are required to move from one point to another by choosing the fastest route possible. From this race, Angga admitted that his coursework in Strategic Environmental Theory helped him develop strategies for decision-making. By applying these strategies in the competition, Angga secured 2nd place in the Airlangga Orienteering Race 2024 held on June 28-29, 2024, at Kenjeran Park in Surabaya. Previously, Angga also clinched 1st place in the Tegal Orienteering Race (TOR) organized by the Indonesian National Orienteering Federation (FONI) in Tegal District on May 25-26, 2024, in the pine forest of Guci tourist area and the climbing route of Mount Slamet via Guci.
“I am very grateful to have achieved 1st place in this event, especially since it’s my first event after nearly a 2-year break from Orienteering,” Angga said.
Despite his active extracurricular involvement, Angga, who is also a scholarship awardee at SPs UGM, managed to maintain his academic achievements. According to him, the key is effective time management and maintaining learning motivation.
“I usually divide my time by scheduling training sessions around my academic activities on campus. So, I adjust my training schedule accordingly. For example, if I have intensive classes in the morning, I usually train in the afternoon or evening, and vice versa,” Angga shared time management tips.
Angga emphasized the importance of balance, continually achieving academic success, and actively expanding his network through various extracurricular activities. Furthermore, he mentioned that this sport undoubtedly brings health benefits to his body.
