SPs (April 24th) – Major Czi Dr. Akhmad Asrofi, S.T., M.Sc., has successfully become the fifth graduate from the Doctoral Program in National Resilience at the Graduate School (SPs) of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), earning the distinction of graduating with honors (cum laude). He took part in the graduation ceremony held at Graha Sabha Pramana on Wednesday, April 23rd 2025.
Akhmad Asrofi, an alumnus of the National Resilience Master’s Program who is currently serving in the Indonesian Army (TNI-AD) at Kodam IV Diponegoro, completed his doctoral education with the support of a scholarship from the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia (KEMHAN-RI).
He earned his doctorate with a dissertation titled “Poor Households’ Responses to Tidal Floods and Their Implications for Regional Resilience (A Study in the Coastal Area of Sayung District, Demak Regency).”
Dr. Asrofi’s dissertation explored the impact of tidal flooding on poor households in the coastal area of Sayung, Demak Regency, and how these disasters affect regional resilience.
His research used a multidisciplinary approach, combining social, economic, and regional resilience perspectives to provide valuable insights for improving disaster mitigation policies in coastal areas. Through this study, Dr. Asrofi demonstrated that tidal floods are able to damage infrastructure and significantly lower the quality of life of impoverished communities, impacting their health, employment, and property.
In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. Asrofi is also active in scientific publication. Two of his articles published in international journals make significant contributions to the study of natural disasters and regional resilience.
The first article, published in the Indonesian Journal of Geography, is titled “The Impact of Tidal Floods on Poor Households in the Sayung Coast, Demak Regency, Indonesia.” It analyzed both the direct and indirect impacts of tidal flooding on poor households in the area. The study reveals how tidal floods affect physical health, employment, and property values, as well as their implications for mental health and community mobility.
The second article, published in the Multidisciplinary Science Journal, is titled “The Tidal Flood Implications for Territorial Resilience in the Coastal Area of Sayung, Demak, Indonesia.” It examined the implications of tidal floods for regional resilience. The study found that tidal flooding significantly impacts various aspects of regional resilience, including geographic, demographic, natural resource, and economic dimensions. It underscored the importance of regional resilience as a component of national resilience, with a focus on policies that support the resilience of coastal areas.
Dr. Akhmad Asrofi’s success highlights his academic excellence and makes a tangible contribution to strengthening Indonesia’s regional resilience, particularly in coastal areas. His dissertation and scientific publications offer new perspectives on how natural disasters like tidal floods can affect the socio-economic resilience of coastal communities. As a member of the Indonesian Army, Dr. Asrofi is committed to applying his research findings in the development of more adaptive policies toward climate change and natural disasters in Indonesia.
Dr. Asrofi has demonstrated that national resilience depends not only on military aspects but also on a deep understanding of disaster impacts on communities and regions. It is hoped that his success will inspire younger generations to continue contributing to national resilience through meaningful research that advances the nation.
