The Graduate School (SPs) of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a follow-up session of its Publish or Perish (PoP), VOSviewer, and Mendeley training on Wednesday (06/10) in Classroom 307, SPs UGM Building. This second session, a continuation of the highly anticipated first session, aimed to help students find research ideas, access relevant references, and conduct bibliometric analyses.

The session was led by Umi Sugiyanti, SIP., M.A., a librarian from SPs UGM, in collaboration with the SPs UGM Publication and Journal Unit. Over the course of two hours, 40 master and doctoral students learned how to install and operate these software tools to support their thesis and dissertation writing processes.

During the training, participants practiced using PoP to search for research references. The data retrieved through PoP was then analyzed using VOSviewer to identify potential research topics. Additionally, Mendeley was introduced as an efficient tool for managing citations and bibliographies.

“As graduate students, we must be able to create bibliographies using applications instead of relying on manual methods as we did during our undergraduate years. Utilizing these tools minimizes errors in referencing,” explained Umi.

One of the participants, Purnomo Herlambang, a doctoral student in National Resilience Studies, expressed his appreciation. “This training is exactly what students need. As someone not very adept at using technology, I have learned so much today. Now I feel confident that I won’t struggle with managing extensive bibliographies for my dissertation.”

The training concluded with the hope that students not only understand the technical aspects but are also motivated to continue contributing to academia through high-quality publications. Students are also expected to consistently integrate technology into their research.
