The Graduate School of Gadjah Mada University (SPs UGM) in an effort to help Indonesia achieve sovereignty, provides grants/research funding to lecturers within UGM. The grants focus on the theme “Transformation Towards Sovereign Indonesia.” Various research topics have been raised by the faculty members at SPs, ranging from social humanities to health-related studies.

One of the research topics was presented by Dr. Budi Irawanto, a faculty member and Chief of the Doctoral Program in Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies, titled “Staging the Screen: Intermediality in the Performance After Hours by Garasi Performance Institute.” Budi (his nickname) explains that the screen becomes an important property of the performance. On stage, various screens can be found with different functions: projecting Usmar Ismail’s films, serving as a divider between spaces on stage, and projecting videos about things that cannot be found in films.

Furthermore, he explains, “The cross-media performance of the Garasi Performance Institute, as part of the creative industry, can genuinely serve as a locomotive for sustainable development and assist efforts in achieving the SDGs.” He emphasized this during the monitoring and evaluation of the 2024 SPs research grant at the East Meeting Room on the 2nd floor of SPs (August 15, 2024).

Through this activity, SPs aims to demonstrate that sustainable development can be achieved through various means and activities, both physical and non-physical.
