In an effort to enhance the public relations functions within Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), the UGM Office of Public Relations, News, and Protocol held a workshop on the theme “Digital Transformation in Crisis Management: Challenges and Opportunities” on August 12th, 2024. The event took place in Multimedia Room 1, at the UGM Main Building. The workshop aimed to equip UGM public relations staff with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively manage crises, especially in the context of digital transformation.

This workshop featured three prominent speakers: Winda Pratiwi, Farchan Noor Rachman, and Mohamad Ryan Saputra. Each speaker provided insights on the challenges faced by educational organizations in managing crises and the importance of digital transformation in overcoming these challenges. The discussions focused on understanding new challenges, strategies for crisis management through digital transformation, and building a positive narrative amid crises through effective communication strategies.

One of the key points emphasized by the speakers was the importance of remaining calm during a crisis. Panic can exacerbate the situation, and it is crucial to follow positive steps to navigate difficult times. The speakers outlined a series of steps that public relations professionals can take to manage crisis effectively, ensuring they are prepared to respond quickly and appropriately.

The event was attended by all public relations staff at UGM, as well as representatives from the Graduate School (SPs), who joined to enhance their knowledge and skills in crisis management, particularly in the realm of social media. The diverse participation underscored UGM’s collaborative spirit in addressing the complexities of crisis management in the digital age.

The speakers encouraged participants to share their experiences and insights, creating a collaborative learning environment. This approach not only enriched participants’ understanding but also helped them develop practical skills that can be applied in their respective roles.

The event served as a reminder of the crucial role education plays in equipping individuals with the skills needed to effectively manage crises. By investing in the professional development of its staff, UGM is taking significant steps toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the areas of education and basic literacy skills.
