Socialization of PMB for Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Tourism Studies in Collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy

On Wednesday, June 12th, 2024, the Graduate School organized a socialization event for the admission of new students for the Master’s (S2) and Doctoral (S3) programs in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy/Agency for Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf/Baparekraf) via Zoom. This meeting was attended by Mr. Andar Danova L. Goeltom, S.Sos, M.Sc, CPM (Asia) – Chief of the HR Development Center for Tourism and Creative Economy, senior officials of Kemenparekraf/Baparekraf, and prospective S2 and S3 students who are Kemenparekraf civil servants. The Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada (SPs UGM) attendees included Prof. Ir. Siti Malkhamah, M.Sc., Ph.D., Dean of the Graduate School, Dr. Widyanto Dwi Nugroho, S.Hut., M.Agr., Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Cooperation, Dr. techn. Khabib Mustofa, S.Si., M.Kom., Vice Dean for Finance, Assets, and Human Resources, Drs. Hendrie Adji Kusworo, Ph.D., Chief of the Doctoral Program in Tourism Studies, Dr. rer. pol. Dyah Widyastuti, S.T., M.C.P., Chief of the Master’s Program in Tourism Studies, and Prof. Dr. Tri Kuntoro Priyambodo, M.Sc., Coordinator of the Quality Assurance Unit.

The educational cooperation between SPs UGM and Kemenparekraf has been going on for some time. Every year, Kemenparekraf sends its staff to continue their studies in the Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Tourism Studies. The Master program was established in 2017. The staff who had completed their studies at SPs UGM are expected to bring significant improvements within Kemenparekraf. Additionally, Andar Danova stated that the scholarships are expected to encourage enthusiasm and motivation for achievement among Kemenparekraf’s civil servants.

The Chief of the Master Program mentioned that, in general, the Master Program in Tourism Studies accepts bachelor degrees from all fields, however writing skills are also essential to facilitate thesis writing. Graduates of the Master Program in Tourism Studies are expected to use their acquired expertise and knowledge to assist in policy-making within Kemenparekraf.

Meanwhile, the Chief of the Doctoral Program emphasized in his presentation that graduates of the Doctoral Program in Tourism Studies are expected to develop theories and practices of tourism development.

At the end of the discussion, the Dean of the Graduate School of UGM stated that collaboration and initiatives in the development of science and technology in these sectors are crucial to achieving broader sustainable development goals, including economic growth, improving welfare, and environmental conservation.
