with a trasdiciplinary approach
The first batch of intake: Odd semester academic year of 2018/2019
initiated with Health Major
Bioethics is a scientific branch of applied ethics that addresses the problems of living things and their environments. As a developing scientific discipline, bioethics has its own scientific study and perspective that carries a transdisciplinary approach. Bioethics has become an absolute necessity in facing the consequences that arise from the rapid development of science and technology in this globalization era. Knowledge, understanding, and skills in managing ethical problems/dilemmas often determines the merits of the effects of science and technology on humanity. Higher education institutions have a responsibility in preparing prospective generations of scientists and practitioners who are ethical, professional, and moral. Adequacy of the number and readiness of experts with competencies in the field of bioethics, both as educators, researchers, practitioners to policymakers, are the main and urgent needs to be fulfilled.
The Bioethics Master Study Program of Gadjah Mada University was established based on the Rector's Decree No.131 / UN1.P / SK / HUKOR / 2017. This study program is under the auspices of the Gadjah Mada University Interdisciplinary Postgraduate School, in the School of Bioethics, Culture, and Religion.
The Bioethics Master Study Program of Gadjah Mada University was held as an effort to fulfill the demands of the Medical Education Act which states that Bioethics education must be carried out as part of a compulsory curriculum in every medical faculty in Indonesia. Bioethics Master Program in UGM was established as one of the flagship programs, expected to give a significant contribution to society and the nation. The strategy of the transdisciplinary approach in bioethics is expected to encourage productive interactions among various fields of science.
The Bioethics Study Program of Gadjah Mada University was first opened in the odd semester of the 2018/2019 Academic year with Health Specialization.
Based on the Medical Education Law No. 20/ 2011 that every medical and dentistry education institution must develop and deliver bioethics education.

Future Prospects
Graduates of Bioethics Masters Education Program of Gadjah Mada University are expected to become Bioethics experts who have good moral attitudes and tolerant attitudes towards all scientific fields. Graduates of this education program will become experts who will become a bridge between the life sciences and applied philosophical sciences so that they can maintain dignity and tolerance as well as a tolerant attitude towards the development of science and technology.
Through the Law on Medical Education No. 20 of 2013, the need for Bioethics experts, both Masters and Doctoral level has reached more than 70 people (assuming 1 expert in each institution). This need will continue to grow in line with the increasing number of Medical Faculties in Indonesia. The program manager believes that the need for Bioethics education will not only be felt by medical education institutions, but will also be felt by other health professional education institutions, both nurses, nutritionists, public health experts, midwives, and other health professions.
The number of educational institutions in these health professions is very large and continues to grow, so the need for Bioethics experts will also increase.
Outside the field of medicine and health, current Bioethics expertise is also increasingly felt in its interests. Various cases related to conflicts between ethnic groups, religions, races, and even the state are very potential fields of Bioethics. Experts at Gadjah Mada University believe that bioethics can be an alternative solution to these various problems.
