Indonesia has recently faced complex challenges to fulfilling the goal of achieving a democratic and peaceful society. Conflicts have occurred at different levels of society between groups, in industrial relations, and in center-periphery relations. Such developments have underlined the need for high-quality and innovative education in the field of conflict resolution and management, especially analysis of the causes of vertical and horizontal conflicts. For this reason, Gadjah Mada University established a Master’s Program in Peace and Conflict Resolution in February of 2000. This program is the first of its kind in Indonesia and in Southeast Asia.
This program aims to provide new and strategic understandings to aid in the resolution of social, economic and political conflicts both at national and international levels. Units offered in this program therefore include philosophical and theoretical perspectives on peace and conflict resolution, as well as providing practical skills for dealing with communal conflicts. This program is offered to anyone intending to deepen their knowledge on the techniques for resolving conflicts in peaceful ways, whether they are decision makers, NGO activists, business people, or from government institutions and other fields.
